A pure silver ice cream spoon softens ice cream as you hold it: silver passes the warmth of your hand to the bowl of the spoon so quickly that it melts the surface just enough to scoop smoothly. The same property makes a silver cup feel cold the moment you pour a beer into it.
This guide looks at two pieces by 宗彩庵, a precious-metal workshop in Taito, Tokyo: an ice cream spoon and a beer cup, both in pure silver (Silver 999) and both presented in a paulownia-wood box. It covers what “pure silver” means, how to use and care for it, what to know before giving it as a gift, and how to order from outside Japan.

What “pure silver” (Silver 999) means
Pure silver is silver at 99.9% purity, often stamped or labeled Silver 999. Silver is known as one of the best conductors of heat among metals, which is why these pieces warm to your hand or chill with a cold drink so quickly.
Most silver jewelry and much silver cutlery is sterling silver (Silver 925): 92.5% silver alloyed with copper or other metals for hardness. Pure silver is softer, so it can scratch or dent more easily if knocked or dropped. If you want to compare the two in detail, see our Japanese-language guide Silver 999 rings and bangles.
The pure silver ice cream spoon
The pure silver ice cream spoon — its Japanese name means “melt with heat conduction and eat” — was carefully finished by a skilled Japanese craftsman. 宗彩庵 explains that the excellent thermal conductivity of 99.9% silver carries the warmth of your hand to the ice cream, softening it so the spoon glides through.
- Size: approx. 2 × 8 cm
- Weight: approx. 20 g
- Material: pure silver, Silver 999

The maker gives two cautions: do not use it with hot food, and do not put it in a microwave or dishwasher.

The beer cup 「煌」
The pure silver beer cup 「煌」 — named with a kanji associated with brilliance — is handmade, one at a time, by a skilled Japanese craftsman. According to 宗彩庵, silver's high thermal conductivity keeps beer cold from the moment it is poured and brings out its aroma and texture, while the silver's luster deepens the more the cup is used.
- Size: approx. 6 cm across the rim, 11 cm tall
- Weight: approx. 140 g
- Capacity: approx. 200 ml
- Material: pure silver, Silver 999
- Comes in a paulownia-wood box
- Lead time: about one month
- Price: ¥200,000 (tax included, as of October 2026)
Cautions from the maker: do not pour hot drinks into it (risk of burns), avoid microwaves and dishwashers, and do not leave acidic or salty contents in it for long periods.

Silver that “grows”: tarnish and care
In the workshop's own words, silver “deepens with time and changes its expression along with the life of the person who uses it.” Touched and polished, it gains a character unique to its owner — a material that “grows.” The head of the workshop writes of carrying on a “memory of the hands” inherited from a master: the control of the flame, the sound of the hammer, the slightest shift of force. The workshop values yō no bi, the beauty that comes from everyday use.
In general, silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air and slowly turns yellowish and then dark (tarnish). This is normal and can be polished away. General care:
- After use, wash with mild detergent and a soft sponge, then dry immediately with a cloth.
- When it darkens, polish lightly with a silver-polishing cloth.
- Abrasive cleaners can leave fine scratches.
- Store it in a bag or box to limit contact with air.
Always follow the care notes that come with your piece, and ask the maker if unsure.
Giving it as a gift
Both pieces come in a paulownia-wood box, and 宗彩庵 presents them as suitable gifts. Because silver changes as it is used, they suit milestones — an anniversary, a 60th birthday (kanreki, a traditional milestone in Japan), a retirement — where the gift is meant for the years ahead.
- Plan ahead: the beer cup takes about one month to make.
- Check before using: 宗彩庵 inspects each new piece before shipping and asks you to contact it before use if there is an initial defect or damage in transit. Returns and refunds are not accepted after use.
