Upcycled Kimono Shirts: How to Choose a Kimono Aloha Shirt

An upcycled kimono aloha shirt is a shirt cut and sewn from a kimono that has been washed and taken apart. Because every kimono is different, every shirt is one of a kind — you are choosing a specific piece of fabric, not a design that comes in several sizes. Three things matter most: the fabric (silk, tsumugi, summer kimono or cotton yukata all feel different), the size label, and the condition of the vintage cloth.

This guide uses seven shirts from a kimono atelier in Japan, 着物アトリエ とく市, to walk through each point, and explains how to order if you live outside Japan.

What is an upcycled kimono aloha shirt?

The atelier's motto is “from people who no longer need things to people who do.” It says it was promoting reuse long before words like reuse, sustainable and upcycle were common. After 28 years in a shop that closed because of urban redevelopment, it moved and now works as an atelier.

Each shirt passes through several pairs of hands:

  1. Washers clean the kimono.
  2. Unpickers take it apart along the seams.
  3. Sewers cut and tailor it into a shirt.

Some listings name the person who made the shirt (machiko, yuka, Shizu and others). All fabrics are home-washed before they are made into shirts.

Choosing by fabric

Silk (shoken, 100% silk): supple and fluid

  • Silk kimono men's aloha shirt: A woven ground pattern with a gradation of color. The atelier describes the cloth as supple and soft, settling to the body and changing in nuance as you move.
  • Silk aloha shirt from a cream tsukesage: Made from a tsukesage (a dressy kimono whose patterns are placed to face upward when worn) with a cream woven pattern that, the atelier says, almost looks European. A brown section of the original kimono is placed on the back, and it has slightly larger, unusual buttons.
  • Silk aloha shirt in orange crepe: A komon (all-over pattern) of pinks and bush clover in bright orange, in soft chirimen crepe. It is listed as a “with-flaw” item: there is an approximately 3 cm repair near the hem on the left back.

Tsumugi: crisp yet soft, and better with wear

The silk tsumugi aloha shirt is made from a fine tsumugi (a silk woven from yarn spun from silk floss) that the atelier calls “smooth and slightly rough, yet supple.” Tsumugi grows softer and gains luster the more you wear it; the atelier invites you to “make it your own color.”

Summer kimono: crisp and sheer

The summer-kimono aloha shirt is white-based and made from a crisp summer kimono. The fabric stands away from the skin and is slightly sheer, so think about what you wear underneath.

Cotton yukata: soft like gauze

If you are looking for a yukata aloha shirt, see the 100% cotton yukata aloha shirt. It is made from a fine vintage cotton yukata with a gauze-like feel; the atelier says the coolness and texture of cotton from an era before air conditioning cannot be found in modern yukata.

Black formal silk with an artist's print

The RYOTA collaboration shirt is printed with work by the artist RYOTA on silk from a jet-black formal kimono. The parts that look whitish in the photos are the sheen of the silk. The atelier describes it as a piece for any gender.

Sizing: what “men's L” means here

Most of these shirts are labeled men's size L in Japanese sizing. Two listings — the RYOTA collaboration and the cream tsukesage shirt — do not give a size at all, and none of the listings give measurements such as length or chest width.

Japanese size labels often run smaller than US or European ones, so do not rely on the letter alone. Measure a shirt that fits you well and ask the atelier for the shirt's measurements before you buy; the listings ask buyers to send any questions by message in advance. Because each shirt is one of a kind, there is no other size of the same pattern, and the listings state that returns and complaints after purchase cannot be accepted.

Condition, care and returns

Vintage fabric. Shirts are made from old or well-worn kimono, so each may have wear, small damage, rubbing or stains. The atelier cuts around stains, holes, rubbing, fold marks and discoloration as far as possible but says it cannot always avoid them, and it does not accept returns for these reasons. It asks for buyers who appreciate old things.

Washing. The listings say the shirts can be washed at home, and the English notes advise hand washing to avoid shrinkage. However, the atelier does not guarantee results of home washing; if you are unsure, use a professional cleaner. Paid aftercare is available only for shirts brought to the atelier in person.

Packaging. The atelier chooses the cheapest shipping method, so packaging may be light, and it does not take responsibility after shipping.

Buying from outside Japan

The listings note that the atelier does not handle export shipping itself, and ITOSHIO does not ship directly to addresses outside Japan. International orders go through Buyee, a proxy shopping service: open the product page and use the Buyee button on the page. International shipping, Buyee's fees and any duties are shown on Buyee's screens; check Buyee's guidance for the countries it ships to and any item restrictions. If you have a delivery address in Japan, choose “I have a delivery address in Japan” on the product page.

See how to buy from overseas with Buyee for the steps, or visit Buyee. Since returns are not accepted, ask about size and condition before ordering.
